I was pretty sure I'd heard every single song the Oldies stations had to offer. How did I ever manage to go so long without ever having heard "Hats Off to Larry" by Del Shannon?
Del Shannon is pure greatness. I saw him in concert in 1986. Did you know that he was supposed to take Roy Orbison's place in the Traveling Wilburys after Roy died? That whole suicide thing sorta ruined that plan.
I hope you heard it played by Larry Lujack, among the last of the "boss jocks" I grew up hearing in the 1970s, and who I think is still on the radio in Chicago. One of his contemporaries -- and a Des Moines native -- Ron "Obese" O'Brien -- died last week in Philadelphia. He was one of the great "voices of labor" at WCFL. - David
